Sistema de Salud
El sistema de salud en Cuba es universal, gratuito y accesible, con carácter preventivo curativo y basado fundamentalmente en la medicina familiar a través del Médico de la Familia.
Cuba exhibe la más baja tasa de mortalidad infantil en América Latina y el Caribe y la segunda en las Américas detrás de Canadá con un 6.3 por cada mil nacidos vivos. La esperanza de vida al nacer es de 76 años. Lo cual la pone a la altura de países desarrollados en estos indicadores.
Como promedio existe un médico por cada 168 habitantes y un estomatólogo por cada
1 130 habitantes. El sistema está dotado de una extensa red de instituciones a todo lo largo y ancho del país, dotadas de la tecnología necesaria y un personal calificado que trabaja intensamente en la investigación científica y la utilización de técnicas de avanzada, lo que le ha permitido alcanzar importantes logros en la realización de complejos tratamientos quirúrgicos, el desarrollo de equipos y medios de diagnósticos para la detección y evaluación de enfermedades.
El Sistema cuenta con un total de 16 036 unidades de servicios del Ministerio de Salud Pública en todo el territorio nacional, para un total de 70 424 camas. Producto de la aplicación de los programas nacionales de vacunación, han sido erradicadas del país 9 enfermedades y otras 4 han sido llevadas a niveles de incidencia mínimos, siendo Cuba uno de los países más vacunados del mundo.
Existen 16 instituciones dedicadas a la enseñanza de las Ciencias Médicas, donde se gradúan cerca de 5 700 especialistas de nivel superior. Recientemente fue creada la Escuela Latinoamericana de Medicina, que acoge y brinda instrucción a miles de estudiantes provenientes de las regiones más pobres del hemisferio occidental.
Se potencia el trabajo para alcanzar la excelencia en la prestación de los servicios de salud, para lo cual se ha continuado a través de programas inversionistas el desarrollo de los policlínicos asistenciales –llevarlos al concepto atención primaria de la más alta calidad-, la disponibilidad de medicamentos en el país ha mejorado sustancialmente –se fabrica nacionalmente el 67% del cuadro básico- y, se trabaja en la mejora de las Farmacias y Droguerías.
El 12% del presupuesto nacional se ubica en el Sistema de Salud, superior al 8% del PIB.
